Locale (MI): Detroit Corned Beef Egg Roll

This one has been on my to-do list for awhile. I heard that the Metro Detroit Michigan area had something called the Corned Beef Egg Roll (CBER) and took a little bit of a deep dive. Turns out a Vietnamese Immigrant named Kim White came to Michigan and the CBER was born. I found a local purveyor and tried it and it was everything you’d hoped it was. It worked exceptionally well. We gotta do it.

The Prep Table

Leftover Corned Beef

Head on over to my 2026 St. Patricks Day Post and see how we made the corned beef. We had some leftovers – and I had some leftover egg roll wrappers – so this was meant to be. I couldn’t be happier about what’s about to happen.

Slaw

The only thing I didn’t have ready was the slaw. We want a little bit of crunch with this so a real quick slaw mix is all that’s needed. Once you got a bowl of that made, you got your diced corned beef – we’re ready to make some magic. Hybrid cuisines are very hit or miss – this is a very strong hit. I’ll show you why.

Duck Sauce?!

Family was turned off by the idea of duck sauce, but it’s really just a sweet sauce that works insanely well with this. Corned beef, swiss, slaw with a duck sauce dipper is about as Detroit Corned Beef Egg Roll as you can get. If (When?) I do this again, I’ll make a duck sauce. But right now, we gotta make sure this works.

The Process

Egg Roll meals are fun

Load it up, wet the edges and roll and you got some egg rolls. My first voyage into this culinary adventure was Buffalo Chicken Egg Rolls and they were great. I don’t know if there’s a limit to what you can egg roll. Almost worth exploring a new website venture: Does It Egg Roll?.

These do in fact: egg roll.

Wrapped up and ready to go. Let’s heat the oil and make us some CBRE.

Yes please.

The Result

You’d order this.

I love this picture because this is what I’d imagine the brick and mortar ForensicBBQ would serve. It is also exactly what MrsForensicBBQ served her coworkers because I had too many leftovers. These particular egg rolls did not go to waste, so let’s cut one in half and see what it looks like.

Kim White’s creation: Success.

This would absolutely be an appetizer meal on my menu. This works incredibly well and I will make this again. The duck sauce wasn’t as good as the packets received wholesale, but it might be familiarity speaking.
