I’ve heard from a few of you that I was too harsh on Skyline Chili in the previous post. It was a comical blend of “That’s not a true Ohio coney dog” and “That’s a Cincinnati dog” of which I couldn’t really figure out. Okay, so I didn’t like Skyline Ohio – y’all brag about another Ohio chili dog.. that being Tony Packo’s. Usually I wouldn’t give y’all naysayers the time of day but if trying another chili dog is in the cards – I’m all in.
The Prep Table

We’re doing nothing different. Warmed per directions, chopped onions – no mustard. Same beef dog – Bring it Packo’s. I want to be wrong. Show me the Ohio Coney/Chili dog is better than the Detroit, MI Coney/Chili dog. Let’s go.

I had this same feeling when I popped the Skyline can. This shelf-life game is killing y’alls product. Ain’t no one opening this and being like, “Hell yeah – this is going to be a satisfactory meal, taste and all”. This looks like ass. I’m sure it’ll taste fine, but we’re culinary creatures – we work with all senses.

I didn’t think it could, but it did. The two-toned coney/chili sauce really told me to back off. Don’t do it. (I did it). I’ll be honest with y’all. Ohio is trying to be prideful of their product, it’s just that product ain’t being too prideful.
The Process

Looking better than skyline – smells good. We’re past the visuals of earlier. I’m hungry, I’m ready to do this hot dog right.

The Result

We’re reviewing the chili not the dog, so I loaded it up. We’re going to splash them diced onion on there and see how we feel.

Alright Ohio. Cincinnati, Toledo.. or whoever else wants to read. My Skyline crew, my Packo’s crew. What’s the result?

That’s the answer to what Ohio is bringing to the Chili/Coney dog game. It’s Michigan’s market. And it’s okay. Tony Packo’s was a way better product than Skyline. But both were lackluster to the Highland Park, MI original. I have a baseline, and I need something special to topple the king. Packo’s ain’t gonna do it, but it wasn’t a terrible chili dog.
It was decent, the initial crack of the can was awful, but post-cook – it was familiar. Nothing special, it was good – but didn’t bring anything fun. Skyline: 0. Packo’s: 1. But y’all playing a different game than Michigan.
