The Poutine Hot Dog

Back when I did my first Quick Bite: Ball Park Franks 4-ways post, I had a lot of positive reaction to my idea of the Poutine Hot Dog. And crazy enough, a lot of my most popular recipes are the ones I view as the easiest to make. Let’s test this hypothesis and give the Poutine Hot Dog it’s own post!

Going into Memorial Day weekend, sure, we fire up the grill and hot dogs and hamburgers cooked up more than ever. This is the closest recipe I have in the queue for an American recipe (Hot dogs.. I know, and I reference Canada. But spoiler alert, we have some Korean influence coming soon). That being said, thank you to all of our heroes, may we remember & honor them all.

Poutine was that Canadian dish I had when I went to the north for hockey tournaments. Sure, it’s found its way to the States, but I’m not entirely sure how far south it’s made. If this idea is new to you, then let me introduce you to an absolutely delicious comfort food.

Poutine is brown gravy and cheese curds that top a bed of french fries. It’s such a delicious treat. When I made them in the Quick Bite post, I used up an expiring can of Turkey gravy and pretended I had cheese curds with sliced cheese.. that I embarrassingly balled up to look like curds. Let’s do things right this time around. Really ain’t much to the recipe, but link above will bypass the post. But give this one a read!

The Prep Table

The perfect 10-20 minute post-work meal

Not a lot going into this one. You can spend as much or as little time as you want to put this one together. I’m not against microwaving the hot dog for the quick experience. But when I have a little bit of time, I like to roll out the RecTeq. I used the white cheddar for these dogs, the yellow ones got eaten either by me for my dog (FurensicBBQ)

The Process

The longest part – frozen oven fries.

These fries say half the time, no flip – and like 10-13 minutes. I like a crispy burnt fry, so I let these go for somewhere between 15-20 minutes. I cooked them to their instruction, so nothing to add here. But the high heat – using the RecTeq as an oven – allowed me to get some high heat on the GrillGrates, perfect for the dog.

Costco all beef dogs.

I bought the giant pack of Costco dogs and divvied them up and froze them into smaller packages. I could do a hot dog on most days, but my body says don’t do these on most days. Let’s get these on the grates.

The fun is putting it together.

The Result

The results from the grill

I put a slight crisp on the buns, the dogs were juicy and cooked, fries were crispy. All that’s left is to heat up the gravy and put it together.

The Poutine Hot Dog.

Drop the dog in the bun. Throw some fries on the sides and on top, put the cheese curds on it and drizzle a healthy amount of beef gravy on there. More power to you if you want to pick this up and eat it, but it was a fork meal for me. So familiar and so good. Try it when you need to do hot dogs a little bit differently. This will probably become one of your favorites. Even if you just make your dogs as usual and plate the poutine as I knew it – it’s a delicious comfort food.

Thanks for letting me give this dish it’s own post – give it a try, it won’t disappoint!

The Recipe

The Poutine-Style Hot Dog

ForensicBBQ
A pretty simple recipe – just combining already made items to make that delicious comfort food

Ingredients

  • Hot Dogs Costco brand
  • Buns
  • Frozen Oven Fries McCain's Quick Cook
  • 1 Can Beef Gravy
  • 1 Pile Cheese Curds

Instructions

  • Get the RecTeq fired up to 425 (per direction on the fries). I also set up a couple GrillGrates on the side for the dogs.
  • Bake fries in the RecTeq per instruction – or longer if you like 'em crispy like me. When you think they're nearing done, add the dogs.
  • Toast the buns whenever you feel like it throughout the cook.
  • Remove from grill when everything is cooked – heat up the gravy on the stove until hot.
  • I like to put the dog in the bun, put a few fries on each side – then rip a few fries and put them on top. Throw an obnoxious amount of curds on there and top with the hot gravy.
  • Topping everything with the hot gravy lets the curds melt into that delicious blend of flavoring. Eat it and wonder why you haven't done this sooner!
