Boiled Peanuts

This post has been hanging around for quite a while. I spent a long time making it, but you’ll see why I was hesitant to post. My first mistake was not having a baseline. When I research a cook, I naturally head South. When I read “southern staple” I’m going to at least try. They’re popular, so they gotta be good! As per usual, I wasn’t going to just boil the peanuts. We’re going to make ’em cajun. Going to the ball game, the vendors outside the park always sell two bags: Plain and Cajun and I have yet to get a plain bag. Cajun Boiled Peanuts, let’s go.

The Prep Table

Raw nuts

Three pounds of nuts and a whole lot of seasonings. If these turn out good, I’ll have quite the gift bags for people. Was reading that I needed green peanuts, but that ain’t happening up in the Midwest.

The Process

Excuse to use the new turkey fryer
So much seasoning
Some spicy habanero flavor
The Boil

I let the pictures tell the story for a little bit there. Was reading you can slow cook these for a day, but we’re doing couple hour boil. The damn safety on the propane was driving me crazy. Can’t trust adults to adult anymore. I don’t need to hit continue every 15 minutes. I mean, I did.. but that’s beside the point.

The Result

The peanuts have completed the boil
The finished product

These things were far and away the worst things I’ve cooked. What a waste of time, money and tastebuds. I’m going to chalk this up to an overcook, because no way do people find these delicious. The peanut was softened, and that mouthfeel was not good. South, you lost me on this one. When I head back down, I’ll buy some from the roadside from those who know how it’s supposed to be.. because I am not that person. I won’t try this again without a baseline.. but it’s a safe bet this is the last time you see this on ForensicBBQ.

Go away boiled peanuts. As we roll into Halloween, this was the biggest trick of all trick or treats for me. Hope you all have a safe and pleasant Halloween!
