Spam Bokkeumbap (Fried Rice)

Let’s dip back into the weird a little bit more. Weird for me, cause I’ll see what I have laying around and go from there. Was looking to do a fried rice, and how to mix it up a little bit. Gochujang fried rice? Sure, I’m in. Was hoping to hit that umami flavor and definitely kick up the heat. I’ve only ever had this “very hot” variant and it was good.. so let’s get at it again.

Recipe

Recipe above so you know what I did and I how I did it.. but I share with you the ride, so hop on in.

The Prep Table

Forgot the sesame seeds, but at least they looked nice for the picture.

Pretty standard ingredients. The only thing new in this are those red home-grown cherry peppers. Now I was hoping to have a bunch of these mature at the same time because I want to re-create the Jersey Mike’s Cherry Pepper Relish. That didn’t happen which is why you only see three up top. (Spoiler: It did happen. And it was glorious). We’re going to do the traditional smoke on the Spam.. this time with a gifted inferno rub from The Disgruntled Wannabeez.

Spam lite up top, Jalapeno at the bottom. Jalapeno is still the best.

Two hour smoke on the Spam, or until it’s desired doneness. It’s spam, we’re not going overly intricate with this. I already had the rice cooked up and chilling in the refrigerator. This is the only smoker thing we’re doing here, the rest we’re going crazy on the Blackstone.

The Process

Add Spice, Add smoke.
If you haven’t tried it, TRY IT.

Thought I’d just let those two pictures speak for itself. What a great look when they’re back to back like that. This was the longest part of the cook. Now it’s time to get the Blackstone fired up and have some fun!

Precooked rice from the fridge, Fresh on the rest.

We’re only doing fried rice, so everything is going to be proportional to the dish. We’re dicing up everything – Peppers, Garlic, Onions, Spam.. Dice and mix.

Dice, Slice, and Add.
Start the mix

Pepper, Garlic, Onion went in first to put a lil’ saute on there. Then we mixed in two of the eggs. When the eggs were combined, we came back and threw in the rice, gochujang, soy sauce, and the diced spam. Since this one was new to me – the routine was “Mix. Taste. Add”. Repeat. Until I got what I wanted.

The Result

Real good, real spicy fried rice product we got here.

Now it was just fine as is – but I thought I’d amplify it a little bit, because that’s what I do. We’re throwing another fried egg on top with a slab of that Spam because we’re a visual people. Y’all like it, and I’m all about eating some more of it. MrsForensicBBQ was not tempted by this dish. But I was.

There’s your Spam Bokkeumbap!

This one was excellent re-heated as well. Make this on a Sunday and easily eaten throughout the week. I really enjoyed this fried rice. Next time, I’ll throw some baby bok choi in there, maybe some green onion. Maybe I won’t forget the sesame seeds – but probably will. Let us know if you try this one!
