Kimchi Hot Dogs

Hope you all haven’t been too upset there hasn’t been a hot dog post in awhile. I really have no idea where this idea comes from. I was jonesin’ for a hot dog and wanted to jazz it up a bit. I’ve been kimchi shy for the last 5 years, so I figured lets break the streak. But does kimchi and hot dog really mix? Let’s find out.

Quick and easy.

By the time this is live, it better be well into spring. Just now, it’s gotten warm enough for me to break out the Blackstone, even if it’s just barely outside. I wouldn’t normally go to Whole Foods for my hot dog purchases, but Mrs needed her Whole Foods Bread – so we overpaid for hot dogs. Organic Uncured Grass-Fed Beef Hot Dogs. Holy fancy hot dog.

About the butteriest brioche buns.

As if the overpaying of hot dogs wasn’t good enough, we did so with the buns as well. These were some buttery brioche for sure. I put a slight toast on these, as we still wanted them a bit fluffy inside. We’re going to split the dogs, blackstone ’em up – Throw some lettuce in the bun and top the dog with kimchi and cheese.

Kimchi

I mentioned previously I was a little shy of the kimchi. In my previous line of work, one of my clients decided to use their garage as a veggie fermentation habitat. And that odor ruined me for damn near half a decade. My first taste of kimchi was good – I liked it, and had it very infrequently. Enough to enjoy it when I had it. Then I ran cloud-first into that garage and nearly retched. Let’s overcome this.

Next time, I’m a chop this up a little better. We’re going to cook this up a bit and throw some diced onions on after – to preserve some crunch.

The build.

Used some leftover salad blend as my leafy base. Dog on top, onion/kimchi atop, and then a freshly shredded cheese. Cheese was not all that much of a positive addition. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t necessary either.

Looks fantastic however.

I’m back in the kimchi game. Thank goodness this “medium spicy” kimchi – not at all spicy – tasted good, cause it could’ve set me back another decade. I enjoyed this mashup and I hope you’ll try it as well. I did make this again a couple days later, without the cheese – and finely chopped the kimchi. And a lot of it. It’s a damn good addition for a hot dog!

Bonus dog (kept the edit.. again)

This was supposed to be my mystery dog post coming up later on, but nah. What was going to be microwave fried shallots and chili crisp topping the dog with cream cheese, became just store-bought fried onions. When I burnt the shallots, should’ve been a sign to come. This one was not very tasty – but I’ll always try something new. This one, in my opinion did not work. Kimchi and hotdog works. It for sure works.

Would’ve eaten all that cheese atop that dog

We say goodbye to another FurensicBBQ family member this week. As much as it hurts now, the time with her was well worth it
