Glazed Donut Grilled Cheese

Part two of my fall special. If you missed the French Toast earlier – Scroll back and see how that turned out! However, there’s a reason I saved this one for last. I saw that Tom+Chee made this one famous, I thought it was just quirky enough to make it’s way to ForensicBBQ. And it was.

The Prep Table

Ain’t a whole lot to look at here. Donuts and Cheese.

MrsForensicBBQ often wonders why she married who she married. When I told her I needed to buy some donuts, to make grilled cheese.. I know she just takes a deep breath, counts to 5 and moves on. I used our premium local cheddar and sliced it thin.. I wanted to try to control the sweet and cheese balance. We’re going to slice the donuts in half and butter the innards. We’re going to crisp it while the sugary was going to meet the cheese. And because I still haven’t gone through the Gordon Foods-size Onion Petals, that’s my side.

So unhealthy.
These things are either underdone or overcooked – rarely a happy medium

Today was actually that happy medium though. The fact these were cooked perfectly was a good sign for how this dish was going to turn out.

The Process

The browning.

Threw these on a medium-hot Blackstone and let that butter work. As soon as I got a decent char, I threw the cheddar on one, and let the sugary halves meet the cheese. I did a couple of flips to make sure the cheese melted and the donuts didn’t burn. I had to be a culinary wizard to not only try this, but to make sure it worked. Look at this picture below, did it work?

Hold up, we got something here.

The Result

These works dangerously well.

I made two sandwiches, but I couldn’t eat both. I ate the one right off the Blackstone because I like a hot meal. And it was so decadent. I felt guilty because this tasted so good. I laughed because it this bastardization of sweet and cheese was flippin good. Normally it’s only my opinion you get on here. Most of my dishes are meaty or spicy, or meaty and spicy.. so MrsForensicBBQ stays away. I brought her a half and said “You have to try it”. I promised there was no spice. Even she had a smile and was like, “That’s too good”. Her one-bite review turned into the half eaten with the instruction I can’t make that again. Guilty pleasure enjoyed by us both.. mission success.
